New Delhi (India News Reporter). In a groundbreaking move US President Donald Trump has unveiled a new visa program called the Gold Card, offering wealthy foreigners an expedited path to US citizenship. The Gold Card, set to replace the existing EB-5 visa, allows individuals to secure American citizenship by investing a whopping 50 lakh US dollars (approximately ₹44 crores) into the country’s economy.
This new initiative will make it easier for affluent foreign nationals to live and work in the US granting them Green Card benefits and eligibility for citizenship, provided they meet the investment criteria. The Gold Card replaces the EB-5 program, which, until now, was the most accessible way for foreign investors to acquire US residency, costing around ₹8.75 crores.
With this significant shift, Trump aims to attract affluent individuals who can stimulate the US economy through substantial investments, job creation, and tax contributions. The new visa is expected to be a game-changer for those seeking a faster route to American citizenship, bypassing the extensive waiting periods for other visa categories.
Commerce Minister Howard Lutnick confirmed that within two weeks, the EB-5 visa program will officially transition to the Trump Gold Card, which is expected to sell up to 1 million cards in the future.
However, the new policy has stirred concern among Indians, particularly those already in the H-1B visa program, as the Gold Card is five times more expensive than the EB-5. With a long-standing backlog in Green Card applications, many Indians might face further delays in securing American residency, while only the ultra-wealthy would be able to afford this new path.
Globally, many countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and several European nations, have implemented similar investment-based residency programs. The Golden Visa concept is becoming increasingly popular, with the US now taking bold steps to ensure that only the wealthiest investors can access its benefits.
This sweeping reform is expected to reshape the US immigration landscape and spark debates about its implications on social equity, national security, and the future of immigration policies.
