Nitish Kumar preparing to bring son Nishant into politics: From opposition to nepotism to nepotism?

Patna (INR). Nitish Kumar, who has taken a tough stand against nepotism in Bihar politics, who once used to fiercely attack the nepotism politics of his opponent Lalu Prasad Yadav, is now seen in a dilemma regarding the entry of his son Nishant Kumar into politics. There was a time when Nitish Kumar had clearly said that no member of his family would join politics. But now the signs of bringing his son Nishant into politics are clearly visible.

Nishant’s presence and playing Holi in front of senior JDU leaders at the recently organized Holi Milan ceremony is being seen as his first political appearance on a public platform. Nishant’s arrival at this ceremony organized after 9 years and the posters put up by party workers confirm that Nishant’s entry into politics seems certain. Nishant has been welcomed with open heart in the posters and his picture has been prominently placed with Nitish Kumar. Lines like ‘Bihar ki janata kare pukar, Nishant ka rajneeti me swagat’ in the posters put up by party workers have further heated up the issue.

Nishant Kumar himself may not have made any official announcement yet, but there is a buzz in his close circles that he is ready to enter politics. Earlier too, he has expressed his desire to make his father the Chief Minister again, which shows his political inclination. This political stir has intensified before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and JDU also feels that Nishant’s entry into politics will maintain the equations created by Nitish Kumar.

This move of Nitish Kumar seems to be indulging him in the politics of nepotism, which he himself used to protest against earlier. There are many examples in the political history of Bihar where the sons and daughters of leaders have joined politics, be it Lalu Prasad Yadav’s sons Tejashwi Yadav and Tej Pratap Yadav, or Ram Vilas Paswan’s son Chirag Paswan. This trend of nepotism is not limited to any one party, but it has also been seen in parties like JDU and BJP.

If Nishant Kumar enters politics, then the question arises whether Nitish Kumar’s earlier claims against nepotism are proving to be hollow? Is he also now becoming a part of the same politics which he had once rejected with full force? This situation is creating a stir not only within JDU but in the entire politics of Bihar. Nishant’s entry will not only affect the power balance within the party, but will also raise questions about Nitish Kumar’s political succession.

However, nepotism in politics is not a new thing. This trend is going on not only in Bihar but across the country. BJP, which often raises its voice against nepotism, itself is full of many such leaders who have reached the top position due to their family’s political legacy.

If Nishant enters Bihar politics, it will be interesting to see how he creates his political identity and what impact his arrival has on JDU and Bihar politics.
