A Marvel of Indian Engineering: The World’s Tallest Chenab River Arch Bridge

New Delhi (India News Reporter). In 2025, Indian Railways added a new chapter to its history with the world’s tallest railway arch bridge. The bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025.
It stands 359 meters (1,178 feet) above the river, which is 35 meters taller than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris and five times taller than the Qutub Minar. It is a 1,315-meter-long steel arch bridge.
Its arch span is 485 meters. The bridge has 18 pillars, and the tallest pillar is 130 meters high. It is designed to withstand seismic and wind conditions.
It is so strong that it can withstand an earthquake of 8.0 magnitude on the Richter scale and winds blowing at a speed of 260 km per hour.
It is constructed with explosion-proof materials, ensuring that even 40 kg of explosives would have no effect on it. The construction of this bridge was made possible after overcoming numerous challenges.
These challenges included geographical conditions, rapidly changing weather patterns, and security concerns. This bridge has significantly improved connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar.
